Historical Overview

The School of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Ioannina was established by Legislative Decree 746/1970 (Government Gazette 267/A/12.12.1970) and included the Department of Mathematics, founded in 1966, as well as the newly established Department of Physics. In 1977, the Department of Chemistry was incorporated into the School of Physics and Mathematics by Presidential Decree 723/1976 (Government Gazette 262/A/06.10.1976). The Faculty of Science of the University of Ioannina was established by Presidential Decree 128/1983 (Government Gazette 57/A/03.05.1983) and included the Departments of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. The Faculty of Science was restructured by Presidential Decree 148/1990 (Government Gazette 56/A/10.04.1990) in order to incorporate the new Department of Computer Science. By Presidential Decree 105/2013 (Government Gazette 137/A/05.06.2013) and within the framework of the “ATHENA” plan, it was restructured again to include the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics (as the evolution of the Department of Computer Science), as well as the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (as the evolution of the Department of Materials Science and Technology). The Faculty of Science acquired its current form by Law 4485/2017 (Government Gazette 114/A/04.08.2017) and is the second oldest Faculty among the eleven existing Faculties of the University of Ioannina.
