Teaching Commendation
Regulation for the Awarding of the “Teaching Commendation” of the School of Sciences, University of Ioannina
Evaluation Criteria
1.Widely recognized teaching work, documented by:
(a) The official, long-term evaluation of the teaching work of instructors by the students of the Department.
(b) The documented contribution to the successful development of innovative teaching methods and approaches, to the design of new courses of the Department or interdepartmental courses that promote interdisciplinary studies and specializations.
(c) The above-average involvement in the supervision of Diploma Theses and Doctoral Dissertations, in conjunction with the scientific or professional progress of the students who completed them.
(d) Active participation in open or continuing education processes, through lectures or lecture series of widely recognized quality, addressed to pupils, students, or professional scientists (e.g. educators, etc.), as well as to the broader public.
The concept of a “course” includes, of course, not only traditional lecture-based courses but also all types of laboratory or seminar courses.
The evaluation should give greater weight to the teaching of core undergraduate courses compared to elective courses.
2. Widely recognized scholarly work. This carries significant weight when present, especially if it includes, in order of importance:
(a) University textbooks with national recognition in their field, i.e. those also used by other University Departments beyond the one in which the author teaches.
(b) Research monographs addressed to scholars of the field, including postgraduate students and advanced undergraduate students with relevant research interests.
3. Research work. In cases of equivalent proposals, the research work of the candidates will be considered as an important additional factor.
4. Academic ethos. This constitutes an obvious prerequisite of the concept of a University teacher.
Right to submit a proposal
- Department Committees (Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies Committees, OMEA, etc.).
- Colleagues of the proposed candidates who are able to provide personal testimony or objective evidence regarding their teaching or scholarly work.
- Graduates of the Departments of the School who have attended courses taught by the proposed candidates.
- If at least one of the above proposals exists, then any additional information submitted to the Dean’s Office by any party capable of substantiating it reliably will also be taken into consideration.
The Dean’s Office always has the option to request the opinion of University Professors who are able to be familiar with the work of the proposed candidates, or to request any other evidence that may assist in substantiating its evaluation.
Evaluation Committee
Rules and Procedures
Members of the Dean’s Office may not be nominated for the Award. The Award is granted biennially. Provided that there are meritorious nominations, two candidates are awarded each time. Otherwise, the Award is granted to one or to no candidate.
Eligible for the Award are the currently active teaching staff of the institution; however, the Award may exceptionally also be granted to retired Professors. Beyond the substantive qualifications (relating to the quality of teaching work), the nominees must have completed at least five years of service at the University of Ioannina.
The call for nominations is announced by the Dean’s Office of the School of Sciences no later than 30 September of the academic year of the award, with a deadline for submission of nominations set for 30 November of the same year. The decisions are announced on 28 February of the same academic year, while the Award Ceremony is scheduled at a reasonable time, one to three months after the decision.
